The physics of phone drowning: why the first minutes decide

Water kills phones through two mechanisms on two clocks. Mechanism one, the fast killer: short circuits, water bridging powered contacts, which is why a wet phone that stays powered on is in maximum danger, and why the single most important action is cutting power immediately. Mechanism two, the slow killer: corrosion, which begins within hours as water and dissolved minerals eat traces and connectors, continuing invisibly for days after everything seems fine. The first-hour protocol targets mechanism one; the drying-and-days phase targets mechanism two.

Water type modifies the odds dramatically. Clean fresh water is the kindest. Salt water is the cruelest, aggressively conductive and corrosive, a beach dunking deserves maximal urgency and, ideally, professional cleaning even if the phone seems to recover. Pool water carries chlorine; toilet and puddle water carry contaminants that accelerate corrosion and deposit residue. Sugary drinks are their own disaster, leaving conductive sticky films that only disassembly and ultrasonic cleaning truly remove. The dirtier the liquid, the more the professional-cleaning option in the final section deserves your money.

Water resistance ratings deserve honest framing: an IP67 or IP68 phone tolerates fresh water briefly when new, but the rating assumes intact seals, which age, weaken with drops and heat, and are never warranted against liquid anyway, check your warranty terms, liquid damage is excluded almost universally, and internal indicators reveal it. Treat a rating as crash protection you hope works, not permission to swim, and run the protocol regardless of the sticker on the spec sheet.

The first hour: exactly what to do, in order

One: out of the liquid, obviously, but with a detail: hold it ports-down as you retrieve it, so gravity drains rather than feeds the openings. Two: power off NOW, holding the power button; if it already turned itself off, leave it off, do not check whether it works. Every second powered is short-circuit roulette. Three: strip it, case off, SIM tray ejected and left open, SD card out, anything plugged in unplugged. Four: dry the outside thoroughly with whatever absorbent thing is nearest, into every seam and port mouth.

Five: evacuate the ports with gravity and gentle motion, hold the phone ports-down and shake it gently, tap it against your palm, rotating so each opening gets its turn facing down. You will often see droplets emerge from the USB port and speaker grille; keep going until they stop. Six: absorb what you can reach, a corner of tissue twisted into the USB port mouth (not deep, not forced) wicks impressive amounts; repeat with fresh tissue until it comes out dry.

The equally important do-NOT list, each of which converts recoverable phones into dead ones: do not charge it (power plus water is the fast killer, and 'checking if it charges' is the most common fatal mistake); do not blow hot air, hair dryers drive moisture deeper and cook adhesives and battery; do not put it in the freezer; do not press buttons repeatedly or mash the screen 'testing'; do not shake violently (splashes water onto areas it had not reached); and do not bury it in rice, the next section explains why that folklore costs phones their lives.

Drying that works, the rice myth, and the waiting game

Rice does approximately nothing: grains cannot reach water inside a sealed phone, absorb humidity slowly at best, and contribute starch dust into ports. Worse, the rice ritual's real cost is time-with-false-confidence: people entomb the phone for a day, feel they have acted, then power on a phone whose interior is still wet. Testing across the years has repeatedly shown plain open-air drying outperforms the rice bag. Skip it entirely.

What actually dries a phone is airflow, time, and mild warmth, in that order of importance. The setup: phone off, ports open and facing down-ish, propped so air reaches all sides, in front of a fan or in a well-ventilated room. Silica gel packets in a closed container genuinely help if you have a stash (the desiccant absorbs meaningfully, unlike rice); the fan is the accessible champion. Mild warmth, a warm room, near (not on) a source of gentle heat, accelerates evaporation; real heat damages, keep it below 'warm to the touch'.

The waiting game is the discipline test: 24 hours minimum for a splash, 48 for a dunking, 72 for full submersion or if any port still shows fog or the moisture warning. The corrosion clock argues for longer, not shorter, and the itch to 'just check' is the enemy; a phone powered on at hour 12 with a wet board can die from a short that hour 48 would have avoided. Power-on day: testing everything methodically

When the waiting is served, power on and test like a technician rather than a hopeful owner, because water failures are frequently partial: a phone can boot beautifully with a dead microphone. Fifteen minutes, and you have a complete damage inventory instead of a vague 'seems fine'.

Address the classic survivors' symptoms. Then hold a healthy suspicion for two weeks: corrosion is progressive, and a phone that passed day-one testing can develop creeping failures, battery draining oddly, random reboots, a camera fogging internally. Back up immediately and comprehensively on day one (the complete backup guide's checklist), keep an eye on warmth and battery behavior, and treat any new symptom as the corrosion clock ringing. Professional cleaning, the economics, and honest prevention

Professional water treatment is not magic, but it is real: disassembly, isopropyl bath, ultrasonic cleaning of the board, connector-by-connector inspection, and reassembly, removing the corrosive residue that home drying cannot touch. It earns its price in three cases: salt water or dirty liquids (residue is the whole problem), phones that partially failed testing (the damage is progressing), and high-value phones or data where the corrosion clock justifies preemption. It is time-sensitive, days, not weeks, and worth a same-week call rather than a someday intention. Bring your symptom inventory from the testing section; it shortens diagnosis.

The economics mirror every repair chapter: weigh quote against value, but add the data term, if the phone holds unbacked-up data, professional rescue while it still boots is cheap against data-recovery-lab prices after it dies. And absorb the insurance reality calmly: liquid indicators inside the phone will have turned, warranty will not cover it, and only specific insurance or credit-card protections do; check before paying out of pocket if you carry any device coverage.

Prevention, finally, is refreshingly concrete: the bathroom shelf and the toilet-pocket are the two great phone-drowning venues, adjust those two habits and you dodge most incidents.
