GPS Not Working on Android? Fix Location Accuracy and Lock Problems

How Android location really works, and why that helps

Android does not rely on GPS satellites alone; it fuses several sources, and understanding the fusion explains most problems. The satellite fix (GPS, plus Galileo, GLONASS and others) is precise outdoors but slow to acquire and blocked indoors. Wi-Fi positioning estimates location from nearby networks, fast and works indoors. Cell-tower positioning is coarse but always available. Android's fused location provider blends these, which is why turning off Wi-Fi can WORSEN your location even when you are using satellite GPS, the phone lost a source it was blending in. Most 'GPS not working' cases are really this fusion misconfigured, not a broken satellite receiver.

That reframing changes the fix strategy. The lever that matters most is 'high accuracy' location mode, which enables the full fusion; disabling it or running a battery-saving location mode starves apps of the good sources and produces exactly the drifting, imprecise behavior people blame on hardware. Before condemning the GPS chip, the settings section below almost always restores accuracy, because the chip is rarely the problem, the configuration and the environment are.

Set expectations by environment, because physics is not a bug. Outdoors with clear sky: excellent, often within a few meters. Among tall buildings (urban canyons): satellite signals bounce off glass and steel, and the dot legitimately jumps, no phone escapes this. Indoors, underground, in tunnels or dense forest: satellites are blocked, and the phone falls back to Wi-Fi and cell estimates that can be off by tens or hundreds of meters. The settings and quick fixes that restore accuracy

Start with the master lever: Settings, Location, on, and inside it, ensure Google Location Accuracy (sometimes 'Improve accuracy' or 'high accuracy mode') is enabled, this switches on the full Wi-Fi-and-sensor fusion and is the single most common fix. Keep Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning enabled within location settings even if you are not connected to a network, because they feed positioning; turning them fully off to 'save battery' is a frequent self-inflicted accuracy problem. Then confirm the app that cannot find you actually has permission: Settings, Apps, the app, Permissions, Location, and grant 'Precise' rather than 'Approximate', many map failures are simply an app stuck on approximate location.

The quick-reset ritual clears stuck state that survives correct settings. Toggle Location off and on; toggle airplane mode for ten seconds; and restart the phone, which resets the location service entirely and is the classic cure for a GPS that suddenly stopped locking. Get outside with a clear view of the sky for the first fix, indoors the phone may never acquire satellites and you will wrongly conclude it is broken; walk to a window or step outside, wait 30 to 60 seconds for a cold acquisition, and watch our GPS test tool tighten from a wide estimate to a few meters as satellites lock.

Two environmental saboteurs are worth removing before deeper steps. Battery saver mode throttles location on many phones, producing drift and slow locks precisely when you are navigating on low battery, disable it and retest. And cases or mounts with metal or strong magnets sit right over the antennas and degrade both GPS and the compass; test once without the case and without the magnetic car mount, a phone that finds itself perfectly in the hand but drifts in the mount has just told you the mount is the problem, not the chip.

The compass problem: when direction, not position, is wrong

A hugely common 'GPS' complaint is not about WHERE you are but which way you FACE: the blue navigation arrow points the wrong direction, or spins, so turn-by-turn tells you to go the wrong way out of the parking lot. This is the magnetometer (compass), a different sensor from GPS, and it needs calibration. The fix is the figure-eight: open Google Maps, and move the phone in a smooth figure-eight motion in the air a few times; Maps often prompts this directly, and it recenters the compass immediately. The compass is easily disturbed, and the disturbances masquerade as GPS faults. Magnets are the enemy: magnetic phone cases, magnetic car and desk mounts, magnetic wallet attachments and speakers near the phone all warp the reading, and a compass that reads wrong only in the car mount is being confused by the mount's magnet, not failing. Metal environments (reinforced concrete buildings, vehicles, elevators) bend the local magnetic field too. Recalibrate away from these influences, and remove magnetic accessories if the problem is chronic.

Distinguishing a compass problem from a position problem saves misdirected troubleshooting. If Maps shows you at the correct spot but facing the wrong way, or the arrow swings while you stand still, it is the compass, calibrate it. If Maps shows you at the wrong SPOT, or the dot jumps around the map, it is positioning, and the settings and environment fixes above apply. Both can be true at once in a bad environment, but treating them as one problem is why people 'fix their GPS' repeatedly without success, name the symptom precisely and the right fix is obvious.

Slow locks, drift, and app-specific location failures

A GPS that takes forever to lock, or drifts after locking, usually has an assist-data or environment cause rather than a hardware one. Phones normally download 'assisted GPS' data (satellite almanac information) over the network to speed up fixes; if that data is stale, first locks after travel or a long idle can be slow, a fix is simply waiting outdoors a minute for a fresh download, or briefly enabling mobile data so the phone can fetch it. Drift after a lock is often multipath in built-up areas (signals bouncing), which no setting cures, or a weak fix from too few satellites, which improves with sky view and time.

When location works in one app but not another, the problem is that app, not the phone. Confirm the app's location permission is granted and set to Precise; check whether the app has background-location permission if it needs to track while closed; and clear the app's cache or reinstall it if it alone cannot find you while our GPS test tool and Maps work fine. Ride-hail, delivery and fitness apps are common offenders here, and their own settings or a reinstall usually resolve it. A phone-wide failure, nothing can find you, points back at the settings and reset steps; a single-app failure points at that app.

Verify objectively before concluding anything. The hardware verdict and living with location

GPS hardware failure is uncommon but real, and it has a recognizable profile: the phone cannot achieve a decent fix even outdoors with clear sky after all settings are correct and resets are done, accuracy stays wildly off or never locks, and the problem often began after a drop (which can damage the antenna) or water exposure (corrosion). Because GPS shares antennas and board space with Wi-Fi and cellular, hardware GPS failure sometimes accompanies weak Wi-Fi or signal, a corroborating clue. A factory reset (backup first, our reset guide) is the final software test; a phone that still cannot locate itself outdoors on a clean system has earned the hardware verdict.

The repair economics mirror the connectivity chapters: antenna or module repair is board-level work whose cost you weigh against the phone's value, and the shared-module reality means a shop may address GPS, Wi-Fi and signal together. For everything short of hardware, the living-with-location habits are simple. Keep high-accuracy mode and Wi-Fi scanning on (the accuracy is worth the modest battery cost, and battery saver is the enemy of navigation). Calibrate the compass with the figure-eight when the arrow misbehaves, and keep magnets away from the phone. Give first fixes after travel a minute of open sky. And calibrate your expectations to physics, urban canyons and indoors will always be imprecise, on every phone ever made.
