How to Clean a Charging Port on Android (and Fix Loose Charging)

A charging port full of lint is the number-one cause of 'my phone won't charge'. Here is how to clean a USB-C port safely, diagnose a loose or worn port, and prevent the debris that stops charging in the first place.

Why a dirty port is the most common charging failure

Cleaning the port safely, step by step

Power the phone off first, always, so nothing shorts while you work near the pins. Then shine a bright light straight into the port and look: a healthy USB-C port shows a small rectangular tongue in the center with contacts, and a dirty one shows that detail buried under a grey-brown felt of compacted lint at the bottom and sides. Knowing what you are looking at prevents both panic ('what is that block?') and half-measures (stopping before the lint is actually out).

Use the right tool, which is wooden or plastic, never metal. A wooden toothpick is ideal: gently work the tip along the bottom and side walls of the port, scraping the lint loose and hooking it out, and you will often extract a surprisingly large, felt-like plug of compacted fibers in one or two pulls. Take your time, angle the pick to lift debris away from the central tongue rather than jamming it against the contacts, and never use a needle, pin, or paperclip, metal scratches the plating, bends the pins, and can short the contacts, turning a dirty port into a dead one. Follow the scraping with air to eject what you loosened: short bursts of compressed air held upright and at a slight distance, or a firm puff of breath, blow the freed lint out. Alternate scraping and blowing until the light shows a clean port with the central tongue clearly visible and the walls bare. Avoid liquids and cotton swabs, alcohol can be used very sparingly on a wooden pick to lift sticky residue but should never be squirted into the port, and cotton fibers just add to the problem you are solving. When cleaning isn't enough: the worn or damaged port

If a thoroughly cleaned port still charges loosely, intermittently, or only at an angle, the port hardware itself is worn or damaged. USB-C connectors endure thousands of insertions, and the springy contacts eventually fatigue, especially if the phone was charged with the cable yanked sideways, or dropped while plugged in (which can crack the port's solder joints to the board). The signatures: a cable that wiggles loosely in a clean port, charging that needs propping or pressure, or a port that got worse suddenly after a drop rather than gradually from lint.

Some people fit tiny port covers or dust plugs, which work but are easy to lose; more practically, just make port-inspection part of your routine, a glance with a light every month or two, and a gentle clean at the first sign of a loose-feeling cable, catches the lint while it is a light dusting rather than a compacted plug.
