A frozen Zenfone screen is almost always a software hang, a stuck app or service, rather than a broken digitizer, especially if the freeze happened suddenly during normal use without the phone being dropped.
- 1Force restart: hold Power + Volume Down for 10-15 seconds until the screen goes dark and the phone reboots, this doesn't erase any data.
- 2If it freezes again shortly after, boot into Safe Mode: hold Power, then long-press the on-screen 'Power off' option until 'Reboot to safe mode' appears.
- 3In Safe Mode, run our Touchscreen Test to check if every region of the screen responds, full responsiveness there points to a third-party app, not the display hardware.
- 4If you have a ROG Phone, check whether AirTrigger or Game Genie is intercepting touch input, these ultrasonic shoulder-button features can occasionally conflict with the main touchscreen driver outside of games, disable AirTrigger temporarily to test.
- 5Uninstall the most recently installed app if the freeze started after installing something new.
- 6If freezing continues after a factory reset via Recovery Mode, the touch digitizer or its connecting ribbon is likely physically damaged and needs repair.
Tip: A poorly fitted screen protector is a common cause of edge dead zones on Zenfones with curved glass, remove it and retest with our Touchscreen Test before assuming a hardware fault.
