A frozen Moto screen, visible but not responding to touch, is almost always a software hang rather than a broken digitizer, especially if it happened suddenly during use rather than after a drop.
- 1Force restart: hold Power + Volume Down for 15-20 seconds until it reboots. This does not erase data and is the correct first move on every Moto model.
- 2If it refreezes quickly, boot into Safe Mode: hold Power, then long-press 'Power off' on screen until 'Reboot to safe mode' appears, if the display is unresponsive, power off completely, then hold Power to boot and press Volume Down as the Motorola logo shows until Safe Mode loads.
- 3In Safe Mode, run our Touchscreen Test to map out which zones respond, a corner or edge that never registers points to hardware, full-screen unresponsiveness points to software.
- 4Check for a case or screen protector edge lifting near the display bezel, Moto's curved-edge models (Edge series in particular) are sensitive to protectors that press unevenly on the touch sensor.
- 5If touch works in Safe Mode but not normally, uninstall the most recently installed app or update, a third-party app requesting accessibility or overlay permissions is the usual cause.
- 6Still frozen after a factory reset from Recovery Mode? The digitizer or its ribbon cable is likely damaged and needs hardware repair.
Tip: Moto Actions gestures (like the twist-for-camera or chop-for-flashlight) sometimes misfire on a failing accelerometer and make the phone seem 'frozen' when it's actually launching an app repeatedly, disable Moto Actions in Settings temporarily to rule this out.
