One UI's aggressive RAM management, Samsung's version of app-killing background limits, is the single most common cause of apps that 'randomly' crash or lose their state on Galaxy phones, and it has a dedicated settings screen most users never open.
- 1Settings → Apps → tap the crashing app → Battery → set 'Allow background activity' on and remove it from any 'Put app to sleep' list if present.
- 2Check Settings → Battery and device care → Background usage limits → 'Never sleeping apps', add the crashing app here if you use it daily, this is Samsung's exemption list separate from Android's own battery optimization.
- 3Clear the app's cache first, then data only if needed: Settings → Apps → [app] → Storage → Clear cache, then Clear data as a second step if crashes continue (this signs you out of that app).
- 4Update the app via Play Store and check for a Galaxy Store version too if it's a Samsung app (Internet, Notes, Gallery), Samsung apps often get bug-fix updates through Galaxy Store on a separate schedule from Play Store.
- 5Check for a pending One UI software update: Settings → Software update → Download and install, a known compatibility bug between One UI and a specific app version gets patched this way regularly.
- 6Boot into Safe Mode to check if a third-party app or a Good Lock module is interfering system-wide rather than the one app being at fault.
- 7If only games crash, check Settings → Battery and device care → check Game Booster isn't misconfigured, its optimization profile can force-limit RAM for a specific title.
Tip: A pattern of crashes right after restoring from a Samsung Cloud or Smart Switch backup usually means a corrupted app-data entry came across in the restore, reinstalling that one app fresh (without restoring its data) usually clears it.
