The Samsung Camera app is a separate system app from stock Android's, with its own cache and data store, and a corrupted cache there is the number one cause of black previews, crashes on launch, and 'Camera failed' errors on Galaxy phones.
- 1Force close the Camera app from Recents, then reopen it, a surprising number of black-screen reports clear on the second launch alone.
- 2Clear the Camera app's cache: Settings → Apps → Camera → Storage → Clear cache (not Clear data, that resets your camera settings and shortcuts).
- 3If the black screen persists, go one step further and tap Clear data, you'll lose custom camera settings but keep your photos, which live in Gallery, not the Camera app.
- 4Check for a pending Camera app update in the Galaxy Store specifically, Samsung frequently patches camera bugs through Galaxy Store app updates between full One UI releases.
- 5Test the camera hardware directly with our Camera Test tool, if the live feed works there in a browser but not in Samsung's app, the issue is confirmed as software, not a failed sensor.
- 6Check for a stuck 'Camera lens obstacle detected' or fingerprint smudge warning on newer Galaxy models, some S-series and Z Fold phones show this if the lens area is dirty or a case blocks the sensor ring.
- 7Restart the phone fully, the camera daemon on One UI can get stuck holding the sensor after a crash, blocking every app (including third-party camera apps) from accessing it until reboot.
Tip: If only one lens fails (ultra-wide or telephoto) while the main lens works fine, that isolates the problem to that specific module, worth a repair estimate rather than more troubleshooting.
