A frozen Galaxy screen is almost always software, One UI hanging on a launcher redraw, a full storage warning, or a single app that locked the UI thread. True digitizer failure is rare and easy to rule out with a touch test.
- 1Force restart with Power + Volume Down held for 10-15 seconds, this works even when the screen shows nothing to your taps.
- 2If the screen responds to the restart but freezes again in the same app, that app is the cause, force close it from Recents (swipe up and hold) once you're back in.
- 3Run our Touchscreen Test to map exactly which zones of the display respond, a frozen UI reads as 'no touch anywhere', while a failing digitizer usually shows dead patches or edges.
- 4Check Settings → Battery and device care → Storage, One UI slows to a crawl and can appear frozen below 1-2GB free space.
- 5Remove the case and any screen protector near the edges, aftermarket protectors are a known cause of ghost touches and unresponsive corners on curved Galaxy displays.
- 6Boot into Safe Mode (hold Power, long-press 'Restart' or 'Power off' until the Safe Mode prompt appears, confirm) to see if a third-party app is hanging the UI.
- 7If freezes only happen with the phone plugged in, swap the charging cable, some counterfeit cables cause voltage noise that One UI misreads as a touch storm.
Tip: Persistent freezing tied to one specific app after updates is a known One UI regression pattern, check the Galaxy Store or Play Store for a pending update to that app before blaming the hardware.
