A Galaxy that won't power on is usually stuck in a discharged battery, a frozen boot process, or a display that's dark while the phone is actually running underneath. Samsung's One UI has its own recovery combo, different from stock Android, so start there before assuming the worst.
- 1Plug into the original or a rated 25W+ charger and wait 15 minutes, a fully drained Galaxy shows nothing at all for the first few minutes, not even the charging icon.
- 2Force restart: hold Power + Volume Down for 10-15 seconds until the Samsung logo appears. This is the Galaxy-specific combo, it does not erase data.
- 3If that fails, hold Power + Volume Up + Volume Down together, on some One UI builds this is the actual forced-restart shortcut.
- 4Boot into Recovery Mode: with the phone off, hold Volume Up + Power (Bixby-key models add Bixby to the combo), release Power when the logo shows, keep holding Volume Up until the Android Recovery menu loads.
- 5In Recovery, use Volume keys to highlight 'Wipe cache partition' and Power to select, this clears a corrupted cache without touching photos or apps.
- 6Try a different cable and wall adapter, Samsung's USB-C port is a common failure point after drops, and a bad cable can mimic a completely dead phone.
- 7If the phone gets warm and buzzes on Power+Volume Down but the screen stays black, suspect a failed display or connector rather than a dead battery.
Tip: Galaxy phones bought through a carrier sometimes lock the bootloader combo differently, if Power + Volume Up does nothing, check your exact model number in Settings → About phone (if it was working before) or on the box, since Note, Fold and A-series recovery combos have small variations.
