Xiaomi/Redmi Screen Frozen or Unresponsive: MIUI Fix Guide

Touch not working on your Redmi or Xiaomi phone? Clear MIUI's System UI cache and test the digitizer.

MIUI and HyperOS run a heavier System UI layer than stock Android, and a frozen 'System UI has stopped' state that looks like a dead touchscreen is one of the most common Xiaomi support tickets, it's fixable in minutes without losing data.

  1. 1Force restart with Power + Volume Up held for 10-15 seconds, this is MIUI's standard combo and doesn't erase anything.
  2. 2Run our Touchscreen Test after restart to map which zones respond, MIUI's frozen UI usually reads as fully dead, while a failing digitizer shows specific dead patches.
  3. 3Check Settings → Apps → Manage apps → System apps → System UI → Clear cache, a corrupted System UI cache is a well-known MIUI freeze cause after updates.
  4. 4Look for a pending MIUI/HyperOS update stuck mid-install, Settings → About phone → System update, a half-applied update is a frequent Xiaomi-specific freeze trigger.
  5. 5Remove the case, especially thick silicone ones on budget Redmi models, edge touch registration is more sensitive to case pressure on Xiaomi's cheaper touch panels.
  6. 6Boot into Safe Mode (hold Power, then long-press the 'Power off' option until Safe Mode is offered) to rule out a MIUI theme or third-party launcher hanging the UI thread.
  7. 7If freezes coincide with a custom MIUI theme installed from the Themes app, switch back to the default theme, third-party themes are a disproportionately common cause of UI hangs on Xiaomi devices.

Tip: MIUI's 'second space' feature, if enabled, can freeze on the switching animation between spaces, hold Power for a forced restart and check Settings → Special features → Second space isn't stuck mid-transition.
