MIUI's Wi-Fi stack shows a 'Saved, secured' status that can be misleading, the phone thinks it's connected while the actual IP handshake failed. Xiaomi phones are also known for picky 5GHz band negotiation on certain router chipsets.
- 1Tap the network showing 'Saved, secured' and select Forget, then rejoin fresh with the password, this clears a stuck connection profile that a simple toggle won't fix.
- 2Settings → Wi-Fi → tap the gear next to your network → check 'IP settings' is set to DHCP and not a leftover static IP from a previous network.
- 3Reset network settings: go to Settings → Additional settings (or Special features on newer MIUI) → Backup & reset → Reset network settings, this clears saved Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and APNs.
- 4If the router is dual-band, try connecting to the 2.4GHz band specifically first, Redmi and budget Xiaomi phones have had documented 5GHz handshake issues on certain older router firmware.
- 5Check Settings → Wi-Fi → Advanced settings → 'Wi-Fi assistant' or MIUI's own network-switching helper isn't force-jumping you to mobile data, disable it temporarily to test.
- 6Update MIUI/HyperOS via Settings → About phone → System update, Xiaomi ships Wi-Fi driver and firmware fixes through regular OTA updates, not standalone patches.
- 7As a last resort, boot into Safe Mode to rule out a security or VPN app from the Security app's own toolkit interfering with the connection.
Tip: Confirm the fix worked with our Internet Speed Test rather than trusting the Wi-Fi icon alone, MIUI has shown the connected icon while still resolving DNS in the background on some builds.
