Xiaomi and Redmi phones running MIUI or the newer HyperOS use a slightly different long-press timing than stock Android, and a stuck EDL (Emergency Download) state after a failed update is a Xiaomi-specific cause worth ruling out early.
- 1Hold Power for a full 15-20 seconds, MIUI/HyperOS devices sometimes need a longer hold than stock Android before the forced restart triggers.
- 2Plug into the charger and wait 20-30 minutes, a deeply drained Redmi shows absolutely nothing, not even a charging LED, for the first stretch.
- 3Check for a tiny LED or brief vibration when holding Power + Volume Up, that combo boots into Fastboot mode on most Xiaomi devices, if it appears, the hardware is alive and this is a software boot issue.
- 4From Fastboot mode (bunny logo), you can confirm the phone is only failing to boot the OS, not fully dead, use Power to cancel and try a normal restart from there.
- 5If the phone shows only a black screen with no vibration, LED or Fastboot response after 30+ minutes of charging, suspect a failed charging port or a battery that dropped below the controller's cutoff voltage.
- 6Try a different genuine or high-quality USB-C cable, budget Xiaomi phones are sensitive to cables that don't meet the current spec for their charger.
- 7Avoid any 'unbrick' tool or EDL-mode flashing guide found outside MIUI's official recovery, unofficial flashing tools frequently make the problem permanent.
Tip: If your Redmi was mid-update when it died, MIUI's own recovery (Power + Volume Up from off) usually offers to resume or roll back the update automatically, give it a few minutes before assuming the worst.
