Samsung Galaxy No Sound or Speaker Not Working

No sound from calls, media or notifications on your Galaxy? Check Samsung's separate volume channels and clogged speaker grilles.

Galaxy phones split volume into more channels than stock Android shows by default, media, ringtone, notification and system sounds are each independently controllable, and it's common for just one to get muted while the others work fine, making the problem look worse than it is.

  1. 1Press the physical volume rocker and check which slider appears, tap the small down-arrow under it to expand all four sliders (Media, Call, Ringtone, Notification) and check none are at zero.
  2. 2Settings → Sounds and vibration → confirm 'Mute' isn't toggled and Sound mode is set to 'Sound', not 'Vibrate' or 'Mute'.
  3. 3Run our Decibel Meter or Speaker Stereo Test while playing audio to check if sound is present but very quiet, versus completely silent, this tells you if it's a volume/settings issue or a hardware one.
  4. 4Physically inspect the bottom speaker grille, Galaxy phones route the loudspeaker through small holes next to the USB-C port that clog easily with pocket lint, use a soft dry brush, not anything sharp or metal.
  5. 5Try our Speaker Cleaner tool, which plays a tone pattern designed to help vibrate trapped moisture or debris out of the speaker grille.
  6. 6Check Settings → Accessibility → Hearing enhancements, confirm 'Mono audio' or a custom sound adjustment profile isn't unexpectedly suppressing one channel.
  7. 7Test with Bluetooth fully off, a Galaxy phone that's auto-reconnected to a paired device (a car, old earbuds) in the background will route all sound there with no clear on-screen indicator.

Tip: If sound cuts out specifically during calls but works for media and notifications, check Settings → Advanced features → Call & text on other devices, Samsung's Continue apps on other devices feature sometimes routes call audio to a Galaxy tablet or Watch nearby.
